The situation of women in Pakistan is complex and multifaceted. While women have made significant strides in some areas, they still face a range of challenges and inequalities in many aspects of their lives. Here are some of the key issues facing women in Pakistan:
- Gender-Based Violence: Women in Pakistan face high rates of violence, including domestic violence, honor killings, acid attacks, and rape. According to a report by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, over 1,000 women were killed in honor killings in 2020 alone.
- Limited Access to Education: Despite the constitutional guarantee of free and compulsory education for all children up to the age of 16, many girls in Pakistan are denied access to education. Discrimination and cultural barriers often limit girls’ access to schools, and many families prioritize their sons’ education over their daughters’.
- Economic Inequality: Women in Pakistan are often paid less than men for the same work, and are more likely to be employed in low-wage and informal jobs. Women’s participation in the formal workforce remains low, with only around 25% of women in the labor force.
- Limited Political Participation: Women in Pakistan are underrepresented in political and decision-making positions. The political system is dominated by men, and women face significant challenges in running for office and participating in political processes.
- Discriminatory Laws and Practices: Pakistan has a number of laws that discriminate against women, such as the Hudood Ordinance, which punishes victims of rape and extramarital sex, and the blasphemy laws, which have been used to target women who advocate for their rights.
Overall, the plight of women in Pakistan is a complex issue that requires a comprehensive and coordinated response from the government, civil society, and international community. Efforts to address these issues must involve promoting gender equality, protecting women’s rights, and challenging discriminatory laws and practices.

Sexual harassment is a pervasive problem in public places in Pakistan, affecting women and girls of all ages and social classes. Women are often subjected to unwanted attention, verbal abuse, and physical assault when they go out in public.
In recent years, there have been several high-profile cases of sexual harassment and assault in Pakistan, which have sparked public outrage and calls for action. In 2020, a woman was gang-raped by two men on a highway in Punjab, and the incident was widely publicized on social media. In response, the government passed a new anti-rape law that increased the maximum sentence for rape to death and created special courts for rape trials.
Despite these efforts, sexual harassment and assault remain pervasive problems in Pakistan. Women often face cultural and social barriers to reporting incidents, including fear of retribution and social stigma. Many women also lack access to legal and medical support.
To address this issue, there is a need for increased public awareness campaigns, legal reforms, and social and cultural change. There is also a need for greater investment in women’s empowerment and education, as well as in the development of policies and programs to prevent and respond to sexual harassment and assault.

Balochistan has been badly affected by the flood in 2022, causing damage to the health system, especially in sub-rural areas of the province. Basic health Units and Regional Health Units need major rehabilitation and provisions of services to cater to the need of the people of the area. The flood has led to the spread of communicable diseases amongst the population. There have been reports of people dying from preventable diseases such as gastroenteritis, Cholera, and measles.
The continuous presence of refugees in Baluchistan has further strained the already overburdened health system in the province. With very limited resources, the health system is struggling to provide basic services to the local population.
The Innovative Development organization (IDO), with the financial support of International organization for Migration (IOM) initiated a project to support health facility infrastructure and to improve the health services for host and Afghan refugee communities of rural areas of district Quetta and Pishin.
Client: Nutrition International-BRSP
One-third of the country was impacted by the floods, and 6.6 million were severely affected. The widespread destruction led to lost lives, livelihoods and infrastructure, leaving nearly 640,000 displaced people living in camps. Of affected households, 6.6 million do not have adequate resources to buy food and 1.4 million people are estimated to need nutrition support. At least 30% of the country’s water systems are estimated to have been damaged.
Malnutrition was already a critical health issue in the flood-affected areas. The 2018 National Nutrition Survey found various forms of malnutrition, including wasting, stunting and micronutrient deficiencies, to be public health issues in the country. The prevalence of wasting among children was nearly 18% and the prevalence of diarrhoea was 19%.
As a consequence of the flooding, diarrhoea rates have risen sharply. During the period of April 2022 to February 2023, a reported 137,552 children under five in Balochistan had suffered from diarrhoea. In Sindh, more than 372,009 diarrhoeal cases had been identified in children under five from August 2022 to January 2023 alone.
Diarrhoea is one of the leading causes of child mortality and malnutrition, resulting from reduced food intake, malabsorption and nutrient loss. Malnutrition also increases the severity of diarrhoea. Children who are treated with zinc and low-osmolarity oral rehydration salts (LO-ORS) recover faster and are less likely to die from a diarrhoeal episode.
